Are Maine Coons good with kids and other pets?

Generally, yes. Maine Coons are known for a patient, easygoing temperament that tends to work well with children and other pets when introductions are handled gradually, though individual personality still varies.

Maine Coons have earned a "gentle giant" reputation for a reason: they tend to tolerate handling, noise, and unpredictable movement from kids better than many breeds, and they're rarely the type to scratch or bolt at the first sign of chaos. That said, patience isn't the same as invulnerability — even the most easygoing cat needs kids to be taught how to approach, pick up, and handle a cat respectfully, especially with younger children who may not yet understand boundaries. Supervising early interactions and teaching gentle handling from day one goes a long way toward a lasting good relationship.

With other pets, the same even temperament tends to carry over. Maine Coons are typically not aggressive or territorial by nature, and many adapt well to living with other cats and even dogs, particularly calm or cat-savvy dog breeds. Introductions still matter, though: a slow, structured approach — separate spaces at first, scent swapping, then short supervised meetings before free access — sets everyone up for success far better than a sudden face-to-face. Resident pets should have their own retreat spaces during the adjustment period, and it's normal for a full sense of comfort to take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the personalities involved.

Individual personality still varies kitten to kitten, which is one reason kittens raised with daily hands-on socialization from an early age, around household noise, people, and gentle handling, tend to transition into busy family homes more smoothly.
