What genetic testing do responsible Maine Coon breeders do?
Most responsible breeders screen breeding cats for HCM via periodic cardiac ultrasounds performed by a veterinary cardiologist, and test for recessive conditions such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) through DNA testing.
This testing helps breeders make informed pairing decisions to reduce the likelihood of passing on these conditions, though no testing protocol can guarantee that every kitten will be entirely free of every possible health condition. In practice, a thorough health-testing program tends to combine a few different pieces: cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram) screening for HCM, ideally performed periodically throughout a breeding cat's life by or in consultation with a veterinary cardiologist, since heart changes can develop or progress over time; DNA testing for known recessive conditions like SMA, which identifies whether a cat is clear, a carrier, or affected; and, depending on the cattery, additional DNA panel testing for other conditions that can occur in the breed, along with blood type testing that matters for kitten health in certain breeding pairs.
Beyond individual test results, responsible breeders use that information actively — avoiding pairings of two carriers of the same recessive condition, for example, so that no kitten from that litter can be affected by it. Good breeders are also generally willing to share documentation of these results, such as cardiologist reports or DNA test certificates, rather than just asserting that testing was done.
It's worth being upfront that genetic and cardiac testing meaningfully reduces risk for known, screenable conditions — it doesn't eliminate all possible health issues a cat could ever develop, since not every condition has an available genetic test and general health can be influenced by many factors. Testing is best understood as diligence, not a guarantee.
